Steam achievements / social profiles, rewarding the top players, social integrations, etc. all come to mind. In fact it’s a lot of the same reasons we would want to have NFTs in our games in the first place, the data is not dominated and owned by one company who refuses to allow access to it to the players who care about it. We don’t know all the best use cases yet, but we know if the data is open we will find good uses.
Even when trying to build meaningful experiences, it feels like we could do much more if API access were available.
From what I see now, even with version 0.12, the persistency feature seems to be limited to multiplayer only.
GM 0.12 – Persistency and matchmaking capabilities to make social and multiplayer experiences even better.
Looking ahead… 202?: GM 0.13 – A brand-new combat system and possibly joystick support. 202?: GM 0.14 – Mounting mechanics? Vehicles, creatures, and new traversal?
Awesome to see the progress on the API specs. Once ready please make available so we can leverage and contribute also as we aim to build the online web builder for SANDBOX.
Cyril is on holiday until the end of the month, FYI.
I can confirm he has does indeed have an open channel with TSB re: this matter, but I would not expect it to be picked back up until the first week in Sept.
I’m a solo builder in The Sandbox, and I’ve also faced the challenge of not having direct access to player data. For my projects, I’ve been focusing on in-game metrics such as time and score.
I understand the Sandbox API is in progress and will take some time. In the meantime, I’ve developed a Python-based scraper that extracts data from screenshots and compiles it into Excel. This data can then be used to drive external community engagement.
If anyone is interested, I’d be happy to help set this up for your future projects. The service is chargeable, but I can assure you it offers a strong ROI. Feel free to reach out if you’d like to know more!
