I’m submitting this urgent proposal: to enable support for m3u8 livestreams (HLS) within the Game Maker by adding this in the priority roadmap.
Livestreaming has become one of the most powerful tools for user engagement in platforms like Decentraland, where live events—such as concerts and community gatherings—significantly boost user retention and activity. I believe The Sandbox has the potential to unlock similar value for its community.
Since the Game Maker already supports video display elements, adding HLS (m3u8) support should be both technically straightforward and cost-effective. This feature would allow creators to stream real-time content—like live music, interviews, or gameplay—to enrich player experiences inside the metaverse.
To clarify, this proposal does not include any request for The Sandbox to provide or maintain a streaming server. The livestream infrastructure (such as the HLS server) would be entirely hosted and managed by the users themselves, minimizing backend overhead for the platform.
Additionally, while I believe this functionality should be available to all creators without requiring prior approval, I understand that The Sandbox may need to implement a permission system for legal or compliance reasons. If so, a lightweight application process could be introduced to ensure alignment with copyright and content policies, without restricting creative freedom.
This feature would be especially valuable during DAO-funded projects—like mine—where live interaction and community-building are essential goals. It’s a small, highly impactful addition that could expand The Sandbox’s creative potential and empower more immersive social experiences.
Thank you for your time and consideration. I’d be happy to provide technical input or collaborate further on the implementation if needed.
Note: The way this should work is simple — I should be able to place a video frame in the Game Maker and paste the .m3u8 link of my stream. Nothing more than that.
I’d also like to clarify why m3u8 is the recommended format:
It’s open and free to use.
It’s the industry standard for hosting livestreams.
Additionally, I’d like to explain why embedding platforms like YouTube or Twitch isn’t ideal. Not only would it require HTML rendering inside a modal (which The Sandbox may not support), but it would also likely be more difficult to maintain in the long term.
At WakeUp, we support this initiative. The request feels meaningful, simple, and genuinely useful for the entire builder community, allowing “experiences” to host recurring live streaming events or serve as online “headquarters” for streamers.
We don’t see it as urgent, but it’s definitely valuable. As long as it doesn’t heavily interfere with TSB’s roadmap or require significant expenses, it makes perfect sense, and we’re looking forward to seeing it live.
I know it’s something I’ve talked about with internal teams before, but I’m not sure the current status, if it’s on the horizon. But yes I totally support this, would like to link live streams into our LANDs.
I personally think the benefits for TSB and the community itself are not only huge but also urgent considering today’s big boom of the streaming modality.
As with any dev request, the hurdle will be fitting into the roadmap, which will be a conversation with TSB that DAO admin can lead if this idea continues to gain popular support.
Streaming into the GM is something I’ve been asking about for a long time. Not sure what the blockers are, but would be happy for the DAO to make this request.
I support it 100%…1000°%…
Unfortunately, I don’t think this is possible, simply because TSB doesn’t allow users to contribute personalized content, whether audio or video.
If this is just a technical limitation, then yes, perhaps we can hope for the integration of this feature.
But if it’s a deliberate “filter” to prevent inappropriate content, then I’m afraid it won’t be possible.
For streamers and youtubers, it would be a good option, and the same goes for small music groups — the costs of organizing such a concert would be much lower.
Thank you for submitting this urgent and insightful proposal to integrate m3u8 livestreams (HLS) into Game Maker. I fully support this initiative and am committed to its successful implementation. Your points about livestreaming enhancing user engagement, similar to platforms like Decentraland, are compelling, and I see significant potential for this feature to enrich The Sandbox’s immersive social experiences.
If the streams are coming in from Twitch/Youtube I don’t think we need to worry too much about content as they have their own moderation systems and if anything we’re probably less strict being an 18+ platform.
Hi All - it’s great that this idea has generated such interest. As many of you know, it is challenging for us to get development support from the Sandbox team, and so I was wondering what the appetite would be for looking into streaming options with a different provider. I note that there are some concerns about YouTube or Twitch, but I did meet the folks from an on-chain streaming service called Soulbound TV at NFC Lisbon, and that may have some features that are appealing - linking to wallet, tipping in tokens, running bounty events that can pay a prize pool for meeting specific conditions.
Could this kind of tool potentially provide a viable alternative?
