Better Visuals, Better Sales: A Thumbnail Proposal for OpenSea

Hi everyone! I originally shared this idea in the Meo Club, but since they’re now expanding their focus beyond The Sandbox, I thought it might be more relevant to bring it here. I’d love to know if this concept resonates with the community and whether it’s something we could explore together. Looking forward to hearing your thoughts!

As a creator working with The Sandbox, I’ve noticed a recurring issue that I think deserves attention. While the Sandbox marketplace does a great job presenting assets with stylized thumbnails — glowing backgrounds, particle effects, and a polished aesthetic — the same assets look completely underwhelming on OpenSea. Here is an example:

On OpenSea, thumbnails often default to raw 3D previews with no background, awkward angles (usually showing the back of the asset when you enter their pages), and no visual context. For characters and creatures especially, this kills their impact and makes them visually uncompetitive compared to other NFT collections.

So here’s my proposal: Let creators upload a custom thumbnail image when publishing an asset on The Sandbox site. This thumbnail would be used exclusively for OpenSea, without affecting how the asset appears on The Sandbox’s native marketplace.

This thumbnail could be a good render with a cool background (similar to how it is now in the Marketplace), GM screen captures, and even showcase equipment being used on Avatars. It could also highlight animated poses, thematic lighting, or seasonal aesthetics — giving creators the freedom to present their assets in a way that aligns with their collection’s identity. Whether it’s a cinematic shot of a creature mid-roar, a stylized portrait of a character in action, or a curated scene from the Game Maker, this flexibility would allow thumbnails to truly reflect the asset’s personality and purpose.
Here is a simple example:

Adding these possibilities would not only enhance visual storytelling but also help buyers better understand what they’re getting. A thumbnail that shows an avatar wielding a sword or wearing a rare helmet instantly communicates utility and appeal. It’s not just about aesthetics — it’s about making the showcase more intuitive, immersive, and engaging.

From a technical standpoint, this is very doable. It could be implemented as:

A simple image upload field in the asset submission flow

A new metadata tag (e.g. external_thumbnail) in the NFT’s JSON

A fallback logic where OpenSea prioritizes this image if present

This would give creators more control over how their work is represented across platforms, and would dramatically improve the visual appeal of Sandbox assets on OpenSea — where first impressions matter.

I believe this small change could have a big impact. Curious to hear what others think — especially creators, collectors, and devs in the community.

I am moving this post from :speech_balloon: General to :light_bulb: SIP: Ideas since it proposes a direct solution to a clear problem.

Any thoughts from our @Delegates , community at large, or @domainallocators on this one?!

It is NOT in SIP format currently, so it’s got a ways to go (based on community feedback here).

What needs done? (introduced above)
Who will do it? (presumably TSB devs)
Is it possible? Feasible? Reasonable for us to ask them to prioritize?

Thanks for posting, @Aikiman Julio!

Hi theKuntaMC!
Thanks so much for your feedback and for moving the topic to SIP Ideas. I’m having trouble locating the post there—even when I filter by the ‘Platform’ tag. Right now, I can only find it under ‘My Posts,’ which makes me worry that others might not see it for consideration.

I love this idea, it’s a small tweak with massive potential. Hope the community rallies behind this.

What’s the next step to push it forward?

Besides picking the thumbnail angle, the thumbnail will show the current frame of the animation you have selected when you export, so you can indeed show a specific action pose or even make a custom animation specifically to showcase the asset. However that could affect things like collision - I don’t remember if it’s based on default animation or upload animation, worth testing if you want. But I am in favor of more options for the thumbnail, especially pretty hi-res rendering with optional backgrounds. I would advise against characters holding items as that could be confusing to buyers who might think they are getting a character, but the ability to test equipment on your avatar in the marketplace would be another good idea.

Seems others are finding it!

It may not be in the top 5 since it’s not had many comments yet.

You can always tag people, too : )

Agree with Alex, more options for thumbnails like angles, backgrounds, and animation would be great.

I’m not sure about letting creators upload their own images, since they could submit something unrelated.

Absolutely, I’d vote against putting a custom image that is not generated automatically from VoxEdit as that would be instantly abused.

Hi Alex! Great input! Yes, there are some options available—like saving the asset with a specific pose—but many creators aren’t aware of this. I’ve uploaded plenty of assets myself with awkward poses, especially during Drops, when selected artists had to mint quickly and the rush was intense.

A more comprehensive upload screen on VoxEdit or the Dashboard could be really helpful. It could include options like selecting from premade backgrounds created by the team, choosing animations and poses, etc. Of course, that wouldn’t solve the resolution issue, but it would definitely improve presentation and usability. For equipment, maybe a ghost character could do the trick. Right now, arm equipment often goes unrecognized, so using a ghost-like figure might help highlight it better.

I think a transparent ghost character would be great, as long as it’s consistently applied so it’s always clear what the focus is.

Should the customization be built directly into VoxEdit, or handled during the web upload process?

I lean toward having it in VoxEdit to feel more intuitive but concerned it might make the tool feel even heavier than it already does.

Hi meowl! I think there are some possibilities here. Maybe it’s best to leave the VoxEdit process as is, to avoid confusion around backgrounds—especially since there’s already a logic tied to Catalysts on the Marketplace. So, these additional options could be implemented only in the Dashboard, focusing on how assets are showcased on OpenSea.
Maybe this:

I think this is a good idea but not appropriate for a SIP. This is something the Sandbox team would have to do, and I don’t want to ask them for visual improvements when there are so many technical improvements I want them to complete beforehand. If there were a way for someone not on the Sandbox team to complete this I would support it.
