[PROPOSAL] Avatar Everywhere – Portable Sandbox Identity Toolkit

1. Executive Summary

Sandbox players pour time and SAND into customizing avatars, yet those identities are trapped in-game. Without a simple way to export, creators lose sales, streamers hide behind generic models, and Sandbox itself misses free brand exposure in Unity, VRChat, and live-streaming hubs. Every week we wait, more metaverse spaces open without a single Sandbox face in sight. The DAO grant program sunsets on 31 August; approving this toolkit now lets us unlock avatars for Season 5 hype instead of “maybe next year.”

Goal: ship an open-source pipeline; VRM exporter, Unity / VRChat plugin, and desktop streaming helper so any holder can take their voxel persona anywhere by August deadline. Our team has already prototyped core conversion code and completed deep R&D on WalletConnect ownership checks. With funding, we will finalize, document, and launch before 31 August, ending the pain of locked-in avatars and amplifying Sandbox’s brand across Web3.

Impact:

  • Players can use the same avatar across Unity, VRChat, and streaming platforms.

  • Avatar creators gain wider visibility and opportunities for monetization.

  • Sandbox benefits from increased visibility and adoption within the broader Web3 and gaming communities.

2. Problem Statement

Currently, Sandbox avatars are restricted to The Sandbox platform, limiting the value of avatar NFTs. Players who wish to reuse their avatars in external platforms (such as Unity games, VRChat experiences, or live streaming) face significant manual effort. This issue causes:

  • Identity Fragmentation: Players forced to manage different characters for each platform.

  • Lost Visibility: Avatar creators and brands miss out on exposure across wider audiences.

  • Marketing Opportunities Missed: Sandbox avatars remain unseen outside the ecosystem.

3. Proposed Solution

Component Purpose Benefit
Avatar Converter (CLI) Exports Sandbox avatars to VRM 1.0 format (mesh, rig, textures). Simple, no-fuss avatar exports
Unity / VRChat Plugin Unity 2022 LTS package (UniVRM) for direct VRM import. Easy integration for Unity games and VRChat
Streaming Helper (Electron 30) Lightweight desktop app using webcam or animation presets for avatar streaming. Streamers adopt Sandbox avatars with minimal effort
Ownership Check WalletConnect v2 verification confirms NFT ownership on Polygon. Ensures proper NFT ownership securely

4. Team

Our team recently collaborated with the Sandbox DAO Grant to successfully build and launch VoxBridge, a widely adopted voxel asset converter. We delivered this open-source toolkit within just three weeks, rapidly solving a core Sandbox developer pain point and empowering creators to seamlessly integrate their assets into Unity and Roblox; demonstrating our deep understanding of the Sandbox ecosystem and technical execution capability.

5. Technical Details

  1. Input: Sandbox avatar voxel rig & metadata (existing export).
  2. Output: VRM 1.0 (stable, glTF-based avatar format).
  3. Technology Stack:
    • Python 3.11 (CLI avatar exporter)

    • Electron 30 (Node 20 LTS)

    • WalletConnect v2 + ethers.js (ownership verification)

  4. Security: Read-only blockchain interactions; signature verification done securely client-side, no smart contracts involved.
  5. Licensing: MIT (code), CC-BY (example avatars).

Hello @DappsoverApps

Thank you very much for submitting your proposal. Unfortunately, the proposal has been rejected because The Sandbox is already working on tools to expand its technology to Unity and other platforms. You can find more information here: https://developers.sandbox.game/api/

HELLO @yuelwolf, thank you for the feedback and for sharing the Developers API link.

We have already completed Milestone 1 of the project. The avatar-everywhere-cli is live on PyPI here: https://pypi.org/project/avatar-everywhere-cli/. This work began before the proposal review because we had been prototyping for months and wanted to prove feasibility early. The CLI currently handles export and ownership verification, but the full project deliverables including VRM conversion, Unity and VRChat packages, and a live streaming helper are still ahead.

On the overlap concern, the Developers API offers asset retrieval and metadata access. Our work builds on top of that API, not in place of it. The goal is to give creators ready-to-use, real-time versions of their Sandbox avatars outside the platform with rigging and materials intact. This includes features not covered in current or announced API work.

We have reviewed both the present API capabilities and the public roadmap to ensure there is no duplication with current or future Sandbox development. The scope is complementary, enabling practical cross-platform avatar use cases that the API alone does not deliver.

We would appreciate the chance to present these distinctions in more detail and discuss how this work can move forward to deliver its full impact before the August 31 grant deadline.

Thank you for your time and consideration.

Hello @DappsoverApps ,

As I mentioned, The Sandbox is already working on an API to expand its ecosystem to multiple platforms. What you see on the page is just what’s currently available, but more features are on the way.

Regarding your proposal, the only part that adds value is the optimization, but we are already working on that in another project. Once it’s functional, I’ll share it with The Sandbox team so it can be integrated into the pipeline and documentation.

Thank you so much for the clarification. We are happy to let you know that we would like to move forward and work on [PROPOSAL] VoxVerify: Avatar Authenticity Layer for The Sandbox. We believe this will be a great add on to Sandbox and we are happy to get your feedback again.

Best regards,
Dapps over Apps.
