The Sandbox DAO Art Commission grant 2025

Preparatory visuals

This work is a digital art piece that reimagines SAND’s chart as a contemporary landscape painting, based on a landscape painting by Kano Motonobu, an artist active in Japan around 1550. The mountains in the chart are displayed in real time, continuously changing the scenery.

This work utilizes numerous pixel art pieces as data-driven art. These digital data files will be permanently stored on Arweave’s permaweb.

Context of the work

In 2016, we began this series of landscape paintings in a soft peace that experienced the sorrows of a defeated nation. By quoting Sesshu’s “Haboku Sansui-zu (Landscape with ink broken)”, we overlaid the landscape painting with a Japanese stock chart during the Pacific War, and exhibited it as a Shinto hanging scroll.

The next triptych we created in 2022, were stock charts for various countries at the time of World War II, the Gulf War, and the Russian invasion of Ukraine. We have depicted the present day, in which the renewal of order by the Multinational Force and NATO is ironically creating new wars, as landscape maps of the economy, which is the primary cause of these wars.

In 2025, we unveiled the digital art piece, which explores the theme of blockchain as a new international community. This work uses programs to acquire cryptocurrency charts, creating pixel mountain ranges that change in real time.
Is it a hopeful utopia or not?

Hi Seb,

You gotta vote on Snapshot you have until the 24th !

The grant as explained in our last report and during the AMA section is simply a way to involve the dao members furthermore on the topic of acquisition which was always a big point of worrying for the community.

Acquisition wise there is a strategic dilemma. On one hand most collection have dwarfed to a third of their value so there is an opportunity but on the other hand it’s true for our portefolio (especially bc Yuga assets) as well so our Working Capital Requirement have drastically increased as ETH price also dipped significantly in the last few months.

However we are on the market for a crypto punk, arbitrating Yuga labs assets toward it while being able to retain provision for the quarterly payout.

Voting is now closed. Thank you to all DAO participants for your involvement.

Congratulations to the winning artist Random Freaks (elected with 44.22 % (12.1m) of the vote), who will have the opportunity to create a bespoke work for The Sandbox DAO. The artist will deliver a physical work and an NFT in February on behalf of the DAO.

This work will enrich the DAO’s collection, and the Art team is honored to work with an artist chosen by the community.

Through this initiative, The Sandbox reaffirms its commitment to becoming a key cultural actor within the Web3 ecosystem, supporting artists whose practices engage with digital culture, and the hybrid identities of our time.

Have a wonderful Christmas and New Year!
