Sandbox Build & Sell - A Builders Challenge Game Publishing Initiative

Helping Builders Monetize Their Skills. Helping LAND Owners Join the Builders Challenge. Empowering the Ecosystem—Together.

The Vision

This Builders Challenge, we thought about this crazy idea, a community-powered initiative that connects skilled builders without LAND to LAND owners who want to join the Builders Challenge but don’t have the time or team to make their own game.
Builders can create and list of ready-made, high-quality game experiences for 1x1 LAND.
LAND owners can browse and purchase a complete, playable game to submit to the Builders Challenge—no building required. This initiative not only empowers small builders and LAND owners, but also adds more games to the map, generates DAO revenue, and drives visibility for The Sandbox ecosystem.

How It Works

Builders create games ready to run on 1x1 LAND, compliant with Builders Challenge rules. Games are listed for sale on a dedicated section of The Sandbox website (with Sandbox support). LAND owners purchase a game and get the game package, ready to publish. Builder receives earnings and retains full creator credit. LAND owner publishes the experience under their LAND in the Builders Challenge.

Builder Earnings & Profit Share

  • Upfront Fee: 500 USD (non-refundable), paid by the LAND owner upon game purchase. This covers the game package.

  • Post-Challenge Payment: After prize pool distribution, an additional 400 USD will be given to the builder by the LAND owner, completing the 900 USD builder payment.

Note: The amount of 900 USD is just a placeholder. Feel free to discuss the FAIR amount that all parties should receive.

Profit Sharing

  • LAND Owner: rest of the earnings (after builder is paid).
  • Builder: 400 USD of total earnings.
  • Sandbox DAO: 5% that will be deducted from the earned USD of the builder to help fund future community proposals.
  • Minimum Profit Clause: If the game earns 900 USD or less, the LAND owner keeps 100% of the earnings, and no revenue share is required.

Builder Listing Rules

Each builder can list up to 2 games at a time. Once both games are sold, the builder must wait 2 weeks before promoting another set (cooldown). This ensures fair opportunity and greater visibility for all participating builders.

Support Requested from The Sandbox

To make this initiative truly impactful, we’re seeking the following NON-financial support:

  • A dedicated “For Sale” Games section on The Sandbox website to showcase builder-made games.
  • Marketing support via social media and newsletters to attract LAND owners.
  • DAO assistance in reaching LAND owners who may want to participate but need a game.

Note: This initiative is COST-FREE for The Sandbox DAO. We are NOT requesting funding—only outreach and visibility support.

Why This Initiative Matters

  • For Builders: Another way to earn from BUILDERS CHALLENGE without owning LAND.
  • For LAND Owners: A plug-and-play solution to join the Builders Challenge with ease.
  • For The Sandbox DAO: A steady 5% share from every successful game sale—no cost, only upside.
  • For The Ecosystem: Dozens more experiences on the map, more creators involved, and stronger community ties.

VOXEL FACTORY - a team of award-winning creators in The Sandbox, leads this initiative. Our mission is to empower small builders, bring more LAND into play, and strengthen the DAO-driven future of The Sandbox.

Any thoughts from the wider community here?

What about our @Delegates or @domainallocators?

Thanks for sharing, @VoxelFactory.

Hi @VoxelFactory

The SIP is a well-thought-out initiative that aligns with The Sandbox’s ethos of community empowerment and decentralization. It creates a win-win for builders, LAND owners, and the DAO while requiring minimal financial investment.

To enhance the SIP’s feasibility, The Sandbox could provide:

  1. Streamlined Listing Platform: Develop a simple submission portal within the existing Sandbox website where builders upload games, including metadata (e.g., screenshots, descriptions) and proof of compliance. This could leverage existing tools like the Experience Dashboard.

  2. Automated Compliance Checks: Implement automated checks (e.g., for 1x1 LAND compatibility or Game Maker version) to reduce manual vetting and ensure quality before games are listed.

I’m fuzzy on the math. So Landowners pay 500 USDC to receive a builder package? The builder then builds, and if the amount earned from the build is less than 900 USDC, the landowner keeps 95% (5% goes to DAO) of whatever is earned. Yes?

What is the profit share of over 900 USDC?

:memo: Summary Response

Thank you for sharing such a creative idea during these challenging times. I appreciate the intention to empower both builders and LAND owners through collaboration.

However, I believe there are a few fundamental limitations that must be addressed for this initiative to be truly effective:

:wrench: Technical Concerns

  1. Asset Ownership & Reusability Are Not Yet Clear
From my experience, it’s still unclear whether assets used in a published experience are permanently bound to that project or remain available for other uses.
Without a clear framework, selling or transferring ownership of a game experience is technically risky.
  2. Needs a More Robust Tokenization Layer
To enable scalable experience trading, we need a framework that combines:
Experience + NFT + Token Mechanics — similar to the concept of Pump.fun.
I previously proposed an idea called “SAND.fun” around this concept here:
    :backhand_index_pointing_right: DAO Proposal - SAND.fun

:light_bulb: Suggestion

Rather than directly selling pre-made experiences, I suggest The Sandbox first explore tokenizing game experiences as digital assets (e.g., Experience NFTs). This would allow:

  • Clear ownership and revenue rights
  • Secondary market listings
  • DAO-based governance for experience curation and utility

1 asset = 1 game

example if you own 1 “XYZ” asset:

  • you can add 1000x the asset YXZ in the game A
  • you need 2 assets if you want to add 1 asset in the game A , and 1 asset in the game B

What happens to the experience purchased by the landowner afterwards?

For example: I bought an experience. we released the experience and the new GC version came out. Some parts of the experience malfunctioned or did not work. Needs to be corrected. As a land owner and someone who doesn’t know much about these things, I don’t want to share my account information.

It is risky to send the experience back again. The seller may not send it back again and I could get scammed.

How will you ensure mutual trust?

As a builder, instead of selling experience for 400 dollars, I would buy Land for 500 dollars and publish a game myself. I can earn all the money myself.

Why should I spend serious time and effort for 400 dollars?

The system is based on earning the Landowner rather than earning the Builder and Sandbox DAO. I think the balance here needs to be adjusted well.

Ex: If the landowner’s earnings are 400 dollars or less, the landowner keeps the money.

Above 400 dollars, the profit rate can be 55% Landowner 35% Builder 10% DAO.

so 1000 dollars was earned.

1000 - 400 = 600 dollars profit.

60 dollars - DAO

330 dollars Landowner

210 dollars Builder.

Hi @Lanzer. Here’s the builder compensation breakdown that I came up with. And the $900 is not final, and I asked for help from the community to come up with a fair amount. And feel free to give your suggestion since I am terrible in math

Total Fixed Builder Payment: $900
The builder will receive a one-time fixed payment of $900, divided into two parts:

  1. Upfront Fee – $500 (non-refundable):
  • Paid by the LAND owner at the time of game purchase.
  • This ensures the builder is compensated upfront for delivering the game package.
  1. Post-Challenge Payment – $400:
  • After the Builders Challenge concludes and prize pool rewards are distributed, the LAND owner will pay the remaining $400 to complete the builder’s total compensation.

:locked: The builder’s earnings are capped at $900.
No matter how much the game earns during the Builders Challenge, the builder does not receive a share of the prize pool beyond this amount.

:small_blue_diamond: What Happens If the Game Wins More Than $900?

If the game earns a larger prize pool (e.g., $1,500):

  • The LAND owner keeps the remaining prize pool after paying the builder’s total $900.
  • Example:
    $1,500 prize pool
    – $400 post-challenge payment to the builder
= $1,100 remaining goes to the LAND owner

:small_blue_diamond: DAO Share (5%)

After prize pool distribution, the LAND owner must allocate 5% of the total prize pool to the Sandbox DAO as a way to give back and support future initiatives.

Using the $1,500 example:

  • 5% of $1,500 = $75
  • The LAND owner would keep $1,025 after paying:
    • $400 to the builder
    • $75 to the DAO

:white_check_mark: Summary

Recipient Amount
Builder $900 (fixed)
DAO 5% of prize pool
LAND Owner Remainder of prize pool after builder & DAO share

This structure ensures:

  • Builders are fairly compensated
  • LAND owners benefit from game performance
  • DAO receives ongoing support from the ecosystem

Thank you @hishmad

Thanks for the feedback and suggestion @shont. As for the asset ownership. What I suggest is to use the Basic & Free assets available on GM so that transferring of experiences would be at least risk-free. About the tokenization, maybe we can come up with a more simplified way of doing it.

Thank you for the feedback and suggestion @Biversen. The experiences should be compatible with the current GC and GM versions on the current Builders Challenge. So, everything should work fine during the event and after the prize pool is distributed and all parties receive their earnings.

Maybe we can think of another way if ever the landowner chooses to use the same experience on the next Builders Challenge or for any other reason they want to use it again. And reach out to the same builder or a different one to do the upgrade.

The landowner can duplicate the experience that needs to be upgraded, and that one gives no risk for them.

As for the builders just buying a $500 land, this initiative is created for those builders who can’t buy a land.

Good intent but too many moving parts to ensure a smooth transition as per what @Biversen has mentioned.

If LAND were worth upwards of 1k USD it’d make sense, but it’s 200 USD now. Even at 400 USD it’ll still make sense for a builder to save up/sell assets to buy a permanent land to participate. Using your example, a builder will be able to afford 2 lands at a 500usd initial payment, more if he gets full payment. If it’s a ballpark and the amount is lesser, it begs the question, will anyone build sellable XPs for that amount.

As for a land owner, yeah it’d make alot of sense to buy a ready made XP but the maintenance will be something that’s up to the builder to decide how/if he wants to provide after sales support.
