SIP-9: Mandate for DAO NFT Collection Management

Credit : Long way to the Moon by Alotta Money

TL;DR

What Part of the collection will be soon transferred under the custody of The Sandbox DAO, this collection will require to be actively managed and oriented toward an objective of cultural significance and financial sustainability. You have the choice to give a mandate to the curator and collection manager that will endorse the responsibility of implementing a roadmap to reach said goals.
Why The rationale behind hiring the service of external advisors and curators to oversee those assets is the benefit of setting up a system working for the benefit of the collection valorisation and sustainability, as any good system the SANDBOX DAO collection should aim to become a whole greater than the sum of its parts and therefore becoming an important cultural lever for the community of the DAO.
How The collection manager and curator will evaluate the existing collection and implement a buying and selling strategy with a curated angle for the collection and valorize those acquisitions through a dedicated quarterly off line exhibition and catalog. The budget requested is 30000€ from the NFT Treasury.
When The last quarter of 2024 will be the only one concerned by the 2024 mandate. Starting in September we should decide which assets are worth transferring into the custody of the DAO Wallet conjointly deciding which of those assets should be loaned, sold or exchanged to constitute the budget for the first wave of acquisition of artworks from both primary and secondary market of this year. Finally, an exhibition should be organized by the end of the quarter to showcase the work newly acquired.

Problem Description

Following an audit realized by Jean Michel Pailhon (founder of Grail Capital & Advisor for the DAO), it appears clear that the current composition of the asset within the future DAO collection is too heavily reliant on one category of the NFT Market: Profil Picture (PFP ) Collectible.

In fact, out of the 14233 assets to be held by the DAO 98% of them are either collectible or PFP. However, this market category of NFT has had by far the biggest fall in volume and value of transactions since the start of the bear market whereas the Art category has proven much more resilient over the same period.

Some of the community behind those collectibles have been onboard to the Sandbox and we aim to keep them involved. However, at heart, The Sandbox is a company that aims to support independent creators and it seems only logical that the DAO collection acquires work from independent artists.

Reorienting the collection from a random accumulation of collectibles and other on-chain assets to a curated art collection appears more aligned with the community value and will prove beneficial on the mid/long term.

The Sandbox has been continuously expanding its NFT collection by acquiring Onchain assets. Recognizing the importance of Digital art curatorship, The Sandbox is now seeking experts to manage these initiatives.

Solution Proposed

To ensure the sustainability of the collection, arbitrage is to be made to diversify the collection through the acquisition of Unique artwork (1/1), unique artwork of a series (1/1/X) and editions from WEB3 Native living and deceased artists via the tutelage of professional art collection managers and curators.

Those acquisitions will be fully financed through the liquidity generated by loaning, selling or exchanging existing assets within the collection.

Additionally, by hosting quarterly offline exhibitions, we will showcase The Sandbox Art Collection’s works, introduce the artists, and produce a catalog of the artworks. This will solidify our presence not only in the digital art community but also in the current art scene. These exhibitions will enhance the value of The Sandbox Art Collection and strengthen its connections with the art community.

Through these efforts, The Sandbox Art Collection will go beyond being just an NFT collection and play a significant role in the contemporary art world. We support these activities to ensure that The Sandbox Art Collection grows into a sustainable and culturally significant collection.

Benefits to The Sandbox Ecosystem

Corporate Art collection and what can transpire from it can become an amazing instrument of influence, it’s a model well-established across the world. Being the recipient of the Leclerc or Pernault Ricard Foundation price for example, can propel an artist’s career and is an amazing tool for the image of the company involved, it strengthens institutional and political relationships that can only benefit further down the line the acceptance of NFTs by governments.

Having a collection that supports The Sandbox community of independent creators as well as being administrated by it will have positive externalities on its ecosystem overall. Down the line, this collection will become a fantastic lever for the community to lobby toward the support of the acceptance of the WEB3 creative and artistic ecosystem as a whole.

Also these activities can significantly impact the traditional art world and creators beyond the blockchain space. They will enhance The Sandbox’s image and strengthen its influence not only in the digital art community but also in the broader art scene. As a result, The Sandbox will grow into a sustainable and culturally significant collection, greatly contributing to the overall ecosystem’s development.

Risk analysis

The team hired does not offer financial advisory but rather art advisory, the potential risk or downside can be that the artist’s works acquired within the mandate might not be liquid on the short-term or profitable investment in the midterm. Although the collection will be more meaningful artistically than it has ever been as well as more diversified which should mitigate any risk related to its profitability. No promises can be made, we can simply offer total transparency and as DAO you will be able to renew your trust in the curation team every year on December 31th if we were to fail your expectations.

However, if any curation members were to be considered unfit to manage the collection because of misconduct or lack of integrity, they should be immediately expelled through the Administrator.

Budget requested

Total Requested Budget for the team, for 4 months: 30 000€ (approx 32,510 USD)

The Acquisition budget of the collection as well as the budget required for the exhibitions will be entirely self-funded through the loaning or selling of existing NFTs within the collection.

Team/Author Background

Brian Beccafico (aka Arthemort)

I have experience regarding missions such as Art Advisory and specifically Art Collection Management. In 2019 I worked in a startup company specializing in cataloging system on-chain for trad art collection managers and I also managed several collections of Trad art collectors for both trad art and NFT acquisition starting in 2020.

My involvement with the topic of the implementation of Blockchain systems in the art world can be traced back to 2016/2017. This early involvement helped me set up a strong network of now influential individuals as well as recognised academics in the space and be recognized as a pioneer or OG stakeholder of the crypto art movement myself.

I’m one of the most recognized and experienced curators in our space, I’ve organized some of the first NFT exhibitions in early 2021 and since then organized several IRL exhibitions as a gallerist in some of the most important trad art and WEB3 events in the world. Through my Start-up Artcrush, I’ve exhibited over 800 artists across the world in every inhabited continent thanks to public display billboards.

As an art collector, I supported early on some of the now most recognized artists in our space (Beeple, Xcopy, Refik Anadol, and more) which led me to advocate for the recognition of our space in the press on several occasions, I give time for quotation to many students working on their thesis and help the political authority come up with a comprehensive overview of our environment

I have a bachelor’s in Business Management delivered by one of the top business schools in Europe, a double master’s in Art history and Art market delivered By Sotheby’s Institute of Arts as well as a certification as Art Market trend Analyst delivered by ArtTactic. I worked in Artist Studio, Gallery, Auction houses, Art Communication Agencies, Art and Blockchain Startup during my studies.

Finally, in 2022 I was selected among nearly 1000 candidates to set up the NFT department for Sotheby’s European activity, making me the youngest department director and full-time specialist in nearly 300 years of activity. I’ve consigned there for several million worth of artwork in the midst of the bear market.

Hyewon Jang (aka Grida)

Since 2021, Grida has held the position of Art Director at IHAM NFT, Europe’s first gallery for NFT and Crypto Art. Her projects include curating “Punkism” and the “Long Live London” exhibition at London’s Saatchi Gallery, connecting crypto-punk art with historical art narratives. Grida is also a co-founder of NFT Factory Paris, the NFT Paris Ambassador, and the chief curator at the Nonfungible conference.

From 2024, Grida expanded the scope of digital art beyond traditional gallery spaces by curating an exhibition at the Paris Intercontinental Hotel for the first time. This event featured digital art and was attended by notable entities such as the Mayor of Paris, Google, Samsung, LG, the Printemps department store, and Air France.

Furthermore, Grida has curated digital art exhibitions at the Korean Cultural Center in Paris since 2021. Her efforts include organizing a lantern festival in September 2021 with Korean digital artists for Buddha’s birthday, an AI art exhibition showcasing works by four Korean and four French artists themed around Busan, and orchestrating the first solo exhibition for the digital artist known as Mr. Misang.

APPENDIX

The Sandbox Digital Art Manifesto

In the current era dominated by digital art, it’s possible we’re witnessing a period of considerable artistic importance. The origins of the term “art,” derived from the Greek “techne” and Latin “ars,” which both mean technology, illustrate the deep connection between digital art and the essence of art throughout history.

Arthur C. Danto, in his work, highlighted that art evolves across various forms, thus expanding its meaning. He suggested that when art hits the limitations of its expression at a particular historical moment, it spawns new forms and mediums. This points to blockchain technology reshaping contemporary art, music, daily life, community dynamics, and regional definitions. Blockchain empowers creators, heralding a simultaneous technological revolution, artistic revival, and shift across generations. On-chain art, a recent development in the evolution of art, reinterprets art’s meaning, broadens its scope, and introduces novel creation and consumption methods.

Walter Benjamin discussed how technology alters the ‘aura’ of artworks. Applying his concept to digital art and NFTs gives a fresh perspective on aura and redefines art’s essence, marking a pivotal moment in art history.

‘The Sandbox’ views this innovative period as one where digital art holds enough significance to become a major current in art history, beyond passing fads. The Web3 culture, focused on community yet familiar, ushers in digital art as a unique movement. We embrace this shift, aiming to promote digital art culture that values creators and communities.

‘The Sandbox’ acknowledges the artistic and historical weight of this technological advancement, offering new possibilities for creator empowerment. Our goal is to integrate digital art into mainstream culture for artists, collectors, institutions, galleries, brands, and the global audience, akin to how music streaming and album sharing have become ubiquitous. This involves creating a culture of free consumption and sharing of digital art.

To this end, we plan to acquire NFTs with cultural, social, historical, scientific, and aesthetic significance, and enhance digital art’s popularity through exhibitions and educational initiatives. These efforts intend to democratize art for a wider audience, pushing art’s boundaries, enriching human experiences through art, and fostering a more inclusive, interconnected world. ‘The Sandbox’ leads this movement towards the widespread acceptance of digital art culture.

Well hello there !

I’m here to answer any questions you might have.

I know my profession isn’t widely known and I’d be happy to go more in depth with what it entails to.

Happy to do an AMA sometime, in that regards, I’m curious to know what is the best hour to do so given the many different time zones the community is operating in ?

Best,

Good day!

Some questions arise here:

  1. Which part of the collection do you mean (avatars, items, …)? (It is clear here that we are still waiting for the 4th quarter of 2024)
  2. How will this part of the collection be transferred to the DAO?
  3. How access to this collection will be ensured and how fraud protection will be ensured.
  4. Doesn’t Opensea promote the automatic creation of a collection and catalogue, respectively, or is it planned to create an ordered collection inside Sandbox (Creating an internal service for trading digital assets)?
  5. If all the above points are met, will the costs of the DAO be repaid? Do you have any preliminary calculations?
  6. Will DAO members be able to place their assets at exhibitions as part of offers from The Sandbox?
  7. Are there any plans to create a location to house The Sandbox’ Museum?

Regards.

Hi Arthemort! Thanks for raising this to the community.

I sent you a tweet asking if you’d be okay appearing as guest on the SANDDAO podcast to go over your SIP. SANDDAO is a podcast all about the Sandbox DAO. We can go over your SIP in details and the community can hear what you’re advocating for.

Some questions I had while reading through this.

  1. “Following an audit realized by Jean Michel Pailhon.” Could you please share a link to this audit?

  2. I wasn’t able to discern how long you’ve been a part of SandFam from what you wrote of your background. What’s your history with the Sandbox and SandFam? Are you a gamer, builder, artist, or something else within the Sandbox community?

  3. “Reorienting the collection from a random accumulation of collectibles and other on-chain assets to a curated art collection appears more aligned with the community value and will prove beneficial on the mid/long term” What community value are you referring to? Who bought this collection in the first place?

  4. When you said “the Art category has proven much more resilient over the same period”, can you please share the data you compiled that led you to this statement?

  5. “Part of the collection will be soon transferred under the custody of The Sandbox DAO” When is this transfer due to happen? How did you come by this information?

  1. Which part of the collection do you mean (avatars, items, …)? (It is clear here that we are still waiting for the 4th quarter of 2024)

The entirety of the asset in the current wallet (0x7A9fe22691c811ea339D9B73150e6911a5343DcA) will be transferred to the DAO.

  1. How will this part of the collection be transferred to the DAO?

2 wallet will be created, a vault to host item that are not meant to be sold such as existing Sand Box asset (there is nearly 5000 of them) and another wallet dedicated to buying and selling. Finally part of the asset in the wallet aren’t worth the gas to be transferred to either of those wallet and therefore will be liquidated from this wallet directly and the fund will be used for purchase later down the road.

  1. How access to this collection will be ensured and how fraud protection will be ensured.

The Sandbox team will have the access to the wallet, I will only address order for buying and selling through a dedicated document.

  1. Doesn’t Opensea promote the automatic creation of a collection and catalogue, respectively, or is it planned to create an ordered collection inside Sandbox (Creating an internal service for trading digital assets)?

Art catalogue are quite specific, here’s for exemple one i did for a show during Paris Photo Fair in Paris, its an exhibition catalog so not exactly the same type of document but it’s all i can share from a copyright point of view unfortunately

Opensea simply provide an UI to navigate a collection.

I’m not sure i understand your point about “internat service for trading digital assets” do you mind rephrasing ?

  1. If all the above points are met, will the costs of the DAO be repaid? Do you have any preliminary calculations?

I personally believe that on the mid to long term having a curated art collection will off set the cost to the DAO. To be entirely transparent I’m am not legally habilited to say that my work will make the collection more financially profitable althoug i can say that it will be from a cultural stand point a much better collection than it is now.

Calculations that can be made at this stage would be rapidly outdated at this is an open and moving market but data has shown that the art section of the NFT market has proven to be more resilient than the collectible section. An audit was realized by Jean Michel Pailhon in that regard.

  1. Will DAO members be able to place their assets at exhibitions as part of offers from The Sandbox?

Artwork to be selected for the exhibition is the responsibility of Grida the curator. I guess we can have artwork from artist of the community included if it make sense, but our original plan is to dedicate those show to the work part of the Sandbox collection.

  1. Are there any plans to create a location to house The Sandbox’ Museum?

Artverse gallery in Paris is very much linked to the Sandbox already as its in what was suppose to be the new office of Sandbox in Paris. “Museum” would be an abuse of language at this stage but I’m fairly confident that in between temporary exhibition that the collection can be permanently exhibited at Artverse.

Hi Lanzer,

Happy to participate to your podcast at the earliest convenience.

  1. I will have to ask permission to do so as such document is under copyright. I have personally seen it and I know that what started the process of that SIP proposal but I don’t have access to it, at this moment.

  2. I must admit I’m not that much involved in the Sand Box ecosystem. I have friend that are heavily involved with it but I’ve never personally owned any Sandbox asset aside from a sculpture made by Alotta Money. I was contacted not because of my involvement with the Sand box but regarding my expertise in managing art and NFT collection. I am gamer at heart, builder with artcrush, and I’ve been working with artists all my life as a curator, specialist and gallerist.

  3. This collection was bought by the Sand Box founders themself to my knowledge mostly by Sebastien Borget as far I as I know. My understanding is that the Sand Box aim to offer a platform to independent creator to build their game on. Artist are independent creator themself therefore I see supporting them as more in tune with the Sand Box value than buying PFP project. Just my personal interpretation.

  4. I’m confident in the veracity of this statement from my experience alone but I will happily come back to it, with an up to data set to back it up, although if you look up Deloitte, Hiscox, Artactic, Artsy and Non-fungible reports this is a trend that is attested in almost every report I was able to find both in Web3 and trad Art.

  5. I don’t think they have a specific date, but if this SIP in accepted, I’m confident that every asset will have been transferred by mid September. I was made aware of this Information by Jean Michel Pailhon who scouted me for this mission.

  1. Yes please, that would be really helpful to my thought process on this.
  2. Thank you for being honest about that. I read from answer #5 that the person who scouted you for this was Jean Michel. Is this your partner in the SandFam, or is there another SandFam member you are working with?
  3. Got it, thanks.
  4. Understood, thank you for clarifying this.
  5. Well that’s impressive and I’m happy to see engagement from the Special Council. Did you know him previously?

Jean Michel is simply a collector who bought work from my exhibitions before, we build up a friendly relationship over the years, and he always has been supportive and of great advice when needed. The friend I’m closest to who is involved with Sandbox is Matthieu Laborie from Creaverse. Grida is the person I’m partnering with on this SIP. She was opening her latest show today so that’s why she hasn’t been active on this forum for now.

Understood, I don’t think I know Matthieu or Grida. Do you have a link to their Sandbox profile or website? Thank you!

Hallo!

Thank you for your answer!

In point 4, I meant the possibility of you creating some internal service in Sandbox for buying and selling NFTs bypassing OpenSea. But this question is rather technical and, as I understand, has little to do with you.

*There are some questions yet…:

8. How and in what form will the digital assets of the Sandbox collection be presented in the Artverse gallery?

9. Do you plan to create a location with a museum inside the Sandbox and place the assets there for permanent display?

Oh I see.

I think it would also be important to go through traditional system to ensure the payment of royalties to artists when it’s due.

Otherwise there are plenty of way to go about it. We’ll see with the team in charge of the operational part what would be the best approach.

Artverse gallery has a lot of screens of different brand for their exhibition.

Printing can also be done if it make sense in term of scenography.

I enjoy the uses of projector and AR/VR as well.

A museum in the Sand Box showcasing the permanent collection seems logic. I know that Grida has worked on this idea. I’m sure the sand box team will be able to put that in place.

The priority for me is building up this collection first and foremost.

Not sure where I can find those, Mathieu is findable online when you key word match it with ÂŤ creaverse Âť his project incubated in the sandbox creator studio.

As for Grida within the SIP there a bio she written about herself.

Hey everyone! Todays’ interview with Arthemort REALLY cleared up what this SIP is all about. This SIP is a nomination for Arthemort and Grida to be the curator/collection manager for The Sandbox’s 14K piece artwork collection that is being transferred to the DAO. Arthemort has both experience and expertise to be the curator with his teammate, Grida.

@Arthemort , my recommendations from our interview

Thanks for having me Lanzer !

Apologies to the audience if I look a bit off I just had my ankle and leg broken a few hour prior and was pretty heavily medicated…

Happy it did clarified the intend behind this sip, will make edit following your recommendation for better lisibility

Yes it clarified it quite nicely. I saw the Twitter picture you sent out of your leg propped up. How you heal up soon! Also that cobblestone driveway looks really nice!

Outside advisors are not invested personally in the project. Ideally people who are personally invested in the project would be the most passionate about making the right decisions for the project vs. someone who is motivated only by compensation. I agree with the general point of the SIP. The point is made that The Sandbox should invest in its own Creators rather than NFT creators not part of the project. I think that is at the heart of Web3 and blockchain. By the same token The Sandbox should support its own Art Curators if there are any. I would hope that there would be enough participants in The Sandbox that we could find a group from amongst ourselves. In addition investing The Sandbox Funds with The Sandbox investors keeps the system closed and sustainable but paying outside advisors means the system is leaking and considering the general state of NFT Projects I worry as an investor that folks might be just trying to bleed off a dying project rather than investing within the Project.
